“Without art, there would be no modern technology, consumer culture, and globalization. Art plays a large part in the creation of my identity. I am a designer.”

Scholarship Recipient 2017

Katherine C. Lee is a first year Interior Design student at California State University, Fresno. Her creative prompt is of a 3D interior model of a fashion show space, consisting of a combined runway and exhibit. She has a passion for fashion design and performance art, areas that have a common space in interior design. The concept of her model comes from creating a theatre-museum type of venue where various elements of art comes in to function for a harmonious atmosphere and presentation.

As a fashion designer, Katherine takes inspiration from her appreciation for avant garde, haute couture, and Asian cultures, among her surroundings. Her love for manga and anime was the start of her as an illustrator. As a performer, Katherine grew up with Hmong dance and discovered ballet and hip-hop upon entering high school, taking inspiration from Asian artists such as Daichi Miura, AAA, and Fairies. Her style of performance is urban choreography, which is inspired by hip-hop dance, ballet, and traditional studio dance. For interior design, she looks to concert venues, music videos, and TV show sets for inspiration. “The decor of the space should be reflective of the person who will inhibit the space, therefore I look to the personality of specific characters for inspiration. When I lay out an interior, I create a character and decide the personality of the character – what the person is like, their beliefs and values, likes and dislikes, personal habits, etc. – these elements help me make critical design decisions in a space meant for a certain character.”

Through art, Katherine has learned to express and better understand herself. It is because of her belief and love of the creative arts that she has chosen to pursue a study in interior design. Her first semester as a college and design student has proven to be a much welcomed challenge that is keeping her motivated to learn more. For Katherine, the Revived scholarship will be able to help her with books and class materials as she looks forward to growing as a student and artist while discovering her style as an interior designer. She looks to pursue a career in event planning and interior design for the home, media, and theatre sets.

Her advice for student artists: “Perservere.”

Revived congratulates Katherine and wishes her much luck and success in her academic and artistic endeavors.
